Working with a personal trainer

Working with a personal trainer is a great way in reaching your health, strength and fitness goals. The correct one can make a difference.

If are one of many fitness enthusiasts who have been plotting away with the same routine for the last couple, it’s time for a change. All those months without getting the results you are after can become a downer and can lead to quitting gym. Likewise, others seem lost as to what to do and now thinking about working with a personal trainer. Choosing the right one ensures success along with the many. Most importantly, a personal trainer should be qualified, registered and insured. Finding the trainer for you depends on your particular goals. If it is strength and conditioning, boxing or wanting to run events. Therefore, with some research you can find one who has the skill and background to cater for you particular goals.

A personal trainer’s job on occasions is to work closely with allied health professional when rehabilitating clients. This can be handy if have incurred an injury and need a rehabilitation program. Furthermore, PTs should be discussing your goals on a regular basis, assess your fitness and provide suitable programs. I’ll cover some points when looking at working with personal trainer outlining what you should be looking for.

Benefits of using an experienced personal trainer are.

Reaching you goals. Above all, this is the main reason you should hire fitness professional. The right one will have the experience, be professional and have good customer service approach in getting you closer towards your health, weigh management or fitness goals. You will be working close with this person. So, a best fit scenario is what you should be looking for.

Provide a safe environment. At my facility it’s always safety first. Given the industry we are in we are basically using the body to do the work. And for this reason, your welfare is a priority. No use in hiring a personal trainer that will work you to the point of potential injury under the mistaken belief that this is what’s supposed to happen. It’s like paying someone to just hurt you or cause you a long tern injury. Be safe and ensure you get results. A PT session is not a beat down. Just trained according to your current condition.

Ensure that you stay motivated. Client motivation is always a very individual thing. I don’t mean having the best music or yelling that you. I meant by getting results. When clients see results it promotes the feeling of achievement and automatically ensures self-motivation. I’ve never yelled a t a client “go hard or go home” or use unnecessary distractions. True results keep you motivated.

Using safe techniques and proper exercise selection delivering results

Constantly work on improving your technique. It’s your time and keeping an eye on you in the correct application of technique should be a priority. For an experienced trainer constantly focusing on your movement should be a given. No point in paying someone to stand next to you with no feedback. An efficient technique ensures the exercise is safe and targets the areas its design to while avoiding injuries.

Ensure progress. This is what we all strive for. Right? Continued improvement and progress is a fundamental and should be a part of their key performance indicators. If you don’t feel you are getting results. One or both of you is not doing what you are supposed to. You are paying for a service, and with consistency make progress. This can easily be measured when completing tasks that were once difficult.

Make the necessary adjustments as you reach you goals.  An observant trainer as part of their role makes the necessary adjustments as you get more mobile, flexible, fitter, stronger and can handle a greater workload. There is plenty to work on when dealing with an experienced trainer. You should always be trained in a way that brings out your best. The great trainers thrive in getting client to this stage and is a great indicator of progress.

Provide some knowledge to help yourself with other factors

Provide supporting and accurate advice on items such as Nutrition and associated behaviours. As fitness professional we are not nutritionist and should not be prescribing diets or tackle delicate matters relating to your nutrition. At best we can advise on best strategies relating to weight management, general health and wellbeing. We are allowed to influence positive changes in poor habits. Educating clients on the basics of nutrition and weigh management can only be as a guide. Not prescription. Obviously, this is not an issue if your PT has the formal education to back this up.

Teach you to be able to exercise by yourself. The experienced trainer who knows this can benefit in overall client deliverables. I myself take on a teaching approach and provide the skills and programs for my own client to be able to work out by themselves. (I cannot run with everyone) Clients hire me to be able to provide them with something they are not able to do themselves that includes a higher level of service. The Pt sessions and own client’s workouts all add up to client results.

Choose the right one and not the best when looking at using a personal trainer

Take your time before you make a choice. That’s why I provide a no obligation trial before we agree on working together. Before entering into any agreement, ensure your personal trainer is registered and qualified. Something that is very important is establishing whether your personality and communication style suits the potential trainer. This should be high on your list of priorities.

In summary, make sure that you have taken adequate time in finding the one that suits you. You may be spending a lot of time with this person. No point in paying with time, effort and your hard-earned dollars on someone you don’t fully feel comfortable with. My private facility is not for all and only suited to individuals who want to train without other distractions, guaranteed. It’s about getting the balance right when working with a personal trainer. Lastly, if done right from the beginning it ensures you will get the service and results you are after.
